In fact, there are many tournaments for Melee right now, and that's why the latest rumour about the Nintendo Switch may be of interest to competitors of the game.
There is a report that the Nintendo Switch will support GameCube games, and one of the alleged reasons for supporting the GameCube Virtual Console is to keep Super Smash Bros. Melee easily playable.
If this is true, this can only mean good news for the future of the game that has already maintained popularity for a decade and a half, and it remains to be seen if its true.
